Lawrence J. Hoffman Named Educator of the Year by the ACFE
Blue Ridge Summit, PA (May 5, 2020) – Lawrence J. Hoffman, an assistant professor of accounting and forensic accounting and director of the Mount’s Forensic Accounting Program, has been named Educator of the Year by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). The ACFE is the world’s largest anti-fraud organization with more than 85,000 members worldwide.
Hoffman, a practicing CPA with a nationally known practice in forensic accounting, returned to his alma
mater in 2015 as a full-time faculty member and quickly developed the Forensic Accounting Program, which includes an undergraduate degree and graduate certificate programs. He previously taught as an adjunct professor at various colleges and universities in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He is also a frequent speaker, lecturer and instructor for professional and industry organizations and conferences.
The prestigious Educator of the Year Award is presented to an ACFE member teaching in a college or
university who has made an outstanding contribution in anti-fraud education. Factors that are considered in selecting the recipient are anti-fraud curriculum development efforts at his or her university; anti-fraud education guidance for students and impact on guiding students toward the anti-fraud profession; influence in encouraging anti-fraud educational growth, training and classroom offerings at his or her university; and publications and professional accomplishments.
“I am very pleased and honored to receive this distinguished award by the ACFE. Being a member since the late 1980s when the organization first formed, it is a culmination to my career as a forensic accountant and fraud examiner and now as an educator,” Hoffman said. “It also inspires me to push even harder in educating the next generation of fraud examiners.”
“We in the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business at Mount St. Mary’s University are thrilled that Professor Lawrence Hoffman has been recognized by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners as the Educator of the Year,” said Michael J. Driscoll, Ed.D., dean of the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business. As a proud alumnus of the Mount Larry lives the university’s mission of leading an ethical life of significance in service to God and others. His passion in developing the Forensic Accounting program within the Bolte School and his dedication to the university and its students is truly inspiring. Congratulations, Larry.”
Forensic accounting is a fast-growing field. The Mount’s forensic accounting undergraduate major is a six-course, 18-hour program added to the traditional 30-hour accounting major. Students in other majors, such as business, criminal justice and economics may also minor in forensic accounting. Mount St. Mary’s University is one of the few universities in the United States offering an undergraduate
major in forensic accounting.
Graduates of the Mount’s undergraduate forensic accounting major are prepared for a career investigating complex financial crime and civil litigation matters. Students develop the skills and knowledge to assist in the ever-growing problem of white-collar crime and other
financial conflicts.
Many Mount-prepared students qualify and pass the Certified Fraud Examiners exam immediately after completion of the program. According to the ACFE, the median compensation for those with a CFE credential is 31% greater than those without the designation.
